stealth holiday

It is um, Buß- und Bettag, which, I don’t really know what that means. Wikipedia says it’s “Repentance Day” in English, but they don’t have anything more to say about it, apparently. It’s the Protestant Holiday here in Catholic Bavaria, yeah? I mean, there’s Saint-This and Maria-That and about 55 Catholic holidays per year, and the Protestants – DrBob refers to them as “the heretics,” mostly because that always makes me giggle – get one. He says it has to do with the fact that we get a whole week off for All Saints’ Day, but in Protestant Germany All Saints’ (November 1st) is Reformation Day, so they get that holiday anyway. Besides, Luther’s whole schtick was that these dang Catholics are having way too much fun, and people should work more and fie upon all these holidays, so wtf? If you want holidays, you shouldn’t have become a heretic.

Um, so yeah. I don’t actually know the background. All I know is that businesses are open and it’s a regular working day, but schools are closed. So, basically, just one more smackdown for mothers who want to work outside the home. Because they don’t get enough of that already.

Song du jour of the day: I Love Rock n’ Roll, by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts.

The song of the day should always be Joan Jett, that’s my vote. And phooey on WOHM smackdowns!

I always thought along the line that because first you got the “Buß” part (prolly a smack on the head), that would send you right off to “Bett”. Hence the name: “Buß- und Betttag”.

Hi! I’m a german pastor and I think I can tell you. It’s the day to repent an pray. It reminds us on the fact that Jesus has called us to change our lives and live as his followers. An knowing that we will fail (because we are all sinners) in this he tells us we can pray for his help in repenting.
It’s really not the most popular day in the clerical calender and the fact is that not too many protestant people visit the services on that day. But it should helpt us to think about our lives and how we are enmeshed in sins.
Ans something else: It is true – there are not so many protestant holidays. But most of the holidays we share with the catholic church like easter or christmas.
    Hop I could help you.
